Recent developments - especially in the fields of education, media and language-planning - have created a greater need for good information on the Gaelic language and its speakers and users. Developing links with the other Celtic language-groups, as well as Europe as a whole have brought greater awareness of the place of language in economic and social life. Planning for the needs of the Gaelic language-group requires the basis of good quality research

Organisations frequently need to know the size, distribution and characteristics of the populations they are seeking to target or provide for - likewise changes over time and future trends.
